There’s no shortage of exciting things to do during a Vancouver summer. From lounging on the sandy beaches to cycling around the seawall, the city’s natural west coast amenities provide plenty of laidback fun. There are also tons of citywide events happening throughout the season that have become synonymous with the city — and highly anticipated by locals! If you want to truly experience what a Vancouver summer is all about, don’t miss these events:

Honda Celebration of Light

Running for three incredible nights (July 27, July 31, and August 3), the Honda Celebration of Light is an annual musical fireworks competition spectacular that has been a Vancouver tradition since it first launched in 1990. This year, India, Croatia, and Canada will be presenting their displays to unique music. Hit English Bay to enjoy pre-fireworks festivities including live music and food trucks.

Vancouver Folk Music Festival

Celebrating its 42nd anniversary this year from July 19-21, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival is a longtime family favourite. Held at the gorgeous Jericho Beach, the festival welcomes an impressive lineup of artists from around the world each year. This year, artists including Basia Bulat, Sam Roberts, and Corb Lund will hit the stage.

Bard on the Beach

The Shakespeare festival, running now until September 21, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Known for its balance of staying true to the classics and infusing a modern twist in them, the festival presents The Taming of the Shrew, set in the Wild West; the romantic comedy Shakespeare in Love; All’s Well That Ends Well, set in India alongside South Asian music and dance; and the political tragedy Coriolanus.
